Chapter Nine

Always a Wolf

“Close the doors!” Gordon bellowed as he, Zari and three wolf guards ran inside the warehouse.

Outside, bodies of several demons littered the ground.

Cliff slammed the doors shut behind them.

“I think we’re clear for a while,” said Ashley, descending the stairs. She’d been on the rooftop, defending the warehouse with magical spells. Luckily, now that the tracking device was far away, only simpler forms of demons had been attacking the warehouse.

“Looks like they actually believe the device is still inside Haylen,” Zari said.

“And since we’ve done our part and stitched him back together, we can get the hell out of here and join the rest of the battle,” Gordon said. “Maddy!”

The redheaded witch appeared at the top of the stairs.

“Come on, Maddy, it’s time for us to go. There’s nothing more we can do for Haylen,” Ashley said.

“No,” Maddy told them. “I’m staying. He’s not strong enough to protect himself right now.”

“Maddy, don’t let him sucker you in,” Zari said. “He kept his end of the bargain, but he’s still a demon.”

“Come on, girl,” Gordon said. “No one is coming after him right now. He’s healing fast and in a couple of hours, he’ll be able to leave.”

“Fine. Then I’ll see you in a couple of hours.”

“I’m ordering you to come with us,” Ashley said.

“Sorry, ma’am, but I’m not a soldier. I’m a volunteer.”

“You’re a member of our clan.”

“If that means abandoning Haylen right now after what he did for me, then maybe we need to rethink my status.”

“You feel that strongly about it?” Ashley asked.

“Yes, I do.”

“All right, then. We can talk about it later. If you want to stay here, the risk is yours.”

“If she stays, I stay,” Zari said.

“We need you in battle, Zari,” Ashley said.

Maddy walked down the stairs and approached Zari. Holding her gaze, Maddy said, “It’s okay. I’ll be fine. I need you to do something for me, though. Give this to my mother.”

Maddy handed Zari a folded piece of paper with Margie’s name written on it.

“This better not be a goodbye letter,” Zari said.

“It’s not. I promise.”

“We need to go,” Gordon said.

Cliff rode his bike into the warehouse and stopped near Zari. “The Alpha just sent a message that Christian and Grit need backup.”

“Go,” Ashley said to Zari.

“Good luck,” Maddy called.

“You, too,” Zari shouted before she jumped onto the back of Cliff’s motorcycle.

They tore into the night.

“Where are they?” Zari shouted to Cliff through the whipping wind and the noise of battle.

“By the river across town. We’re taking the back way. I’m told the main streets are completely blocked from the fighting.”

They traveled without speaking for the rest of the way. Near the mentioned river, a swarm of armor-clad demons circled Maddy’s vehicle, which was trapped between an eighteen-wheeler and several black cars.

“It’s them,” Zari said, pointing to Grit and Christian who were fighting from inside the vehicle. It suddenly flipped and landed hard. Demons tore at the doors. Two of them pulled out Christian. He struggled fiercely.

Grit burst out of the vehicle and knocked aside several demons in an attempt to reach Christian.
